3D beaded lizard instructions

Description

My beaded lizard is a variation if the "gecko" pattern and is sewn the same way. I add a second layer, sightly offset from the top layer, as a belly to round out my lizards more.

Examples are here: [link]

In the instructions above, the belly is in Steps 1, 2, and 5 and attaches to the legs. The back is in Steps 3 and 4 and attaches to the tail. The thread-in-two-colors idea I stole from ChimeraDragonfang's bead dragon instructions. If my instructions confuse you, refer to hers here: [link]

You can use fishing line, beading wire, or thread. I prefer fishing line if I have it, and beading wire if I don't, since I hate handling two needles at once. If you use wire, use the thinnest wire possible or your beads' holes may fill before you are finished.

Step 1. Start at the top, which is the head/jaw. Put the bead in the middle of a long piece of thread. Add the next two beads and loop through them on opposite sides as shown in the pattern. Pull tight, but not too tight, and add two more beads, following the pattern.

When you reach the sixth row, look at Step 2. This shows where you can add stitches by looping back on previous rows in order to tighten the weave and help the final lizard hold its shape. The reinforcements are optional, but my sculptures look like skeletons if I leave them out.

When you reach the last row, continue to the base of the tail on the top layer (row 13 in Steps 3 and 4). Continue as you did before, adding rows as you work back to the head. Refer to Step 4 if you want to reinforce your stitches.

Next, weave your way back to the tail. You can do that either by repeating earlier stitches or by sewing the two layers together. The top layer should overlap the bottom layer so that the layers are staggered.

Add the tail. If you don't like my way, ChimeraDragonfang has an alternate tail in her instructions.

Last, look at Step 5, which shows how to attach the legs. They attach to the bottom layer between rows. Weave back to those rows and add them.

Now tie off your string and you are done. Add wire to the legs and tail if you want to pose them.

Variation: If you want an open mouth like my dragon here [link] has, start sewing the layers together at the third row on each layer.

Have fun. If you think I skipped a step or didn't explain something adequately, leave a comment and I will try to address it.

I find it remarkable that this is my most viewed deviation, with almost 20% of my total views, yet it has almost no comments. Is it useful? Have you made anything similar?
